After burning my thumb the other night, I thought it would interest a lot of you to know how to NOT handle a burn.
After reviewing webmd.com and other sites, I have summarized it as follows:
NO ICE! This may worsen the injury to the skin!
• Instead, within 30 seconds of the burn, cool the injured area with cool running tap water. Then, apply a cool wet compress for pain relief.
Other common remedies, such as butter, have not been proven to work, instead they lock in the heat and cause the burn to keep “burning!”
• You may take a pain reliever.
• For small or superficial burns you may use a triple antibiotic ointment. This will aid in healing and limit the chances for infection.
• One thing I can attest to is using Noxema Skin Cream on a skin burn. (no open wounds). This cools it down and also aids in the healing process.
• Lastly, do not remove blisters!
Hope you never get burned, but if you do, do NOT use Ice.
